This thesis deals with visual analysis of representations of migrant figures in newspapers from the Republic of Croatia and the region. In the first part, in addition to defining terms „migration“ and „migrant“, I outline the brief historical emergence of photography, its importance, and its character which can be aesthetic and documentary. Emphasis was placed on documentary photography, more specifically one published exclusively in newspapers. This is followed by a chapter on engaged „reading“ of photographs, which is of great importance for thinking about the credibility and possible manipulation of them. The second part of the paper describes the visual analysis of photographs. Apart from the assumption of a dual media representation („victims“/„threat“), there was a word about an important dichotomy of „We“ and „They“. Four main levels are presented according to which the photographs are analyzed (1. „Photos as denotative systems“, 2. „Photos as stylistic – semiotic systems“, 3. „Photos as connotative systems“, 4. „Photos as ideological representations“), but also divided into four thematic units (1. „Depictions of the military, police and war equipment“, 2. „Unidentified masses or processions of people“, 3. „Women portrayed as vulnerable mothers with children and infants“, 4. „Repetitive pictures of children, often with dirty and torn clothes“). Visual analysis of a qualitative character with a semiotic background, although limited by a repetitive and large number of photographs, confirmed the stated assumption that migrants are presented in media in two possible ways: as „victims“ and/or as „threats“.
