Abstract
This thesis investigates the development and cultural significance of 19th-century American ghost stories, focusing on Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, Edith Wharton, and Henry James, to uncover how their use of supernatural elements addresses themes of cultural anxieties, historical legacy, and psychological conflicts, reflecting and critiquing their sociocultural context. Through an in-depth analysis of significant texts, the thesis delineates the relationship between American culture and supernatural phenomena in fiction, highlighting the intersections and divergences of these aspects within the broader literary framework. Lastly, the thesis indicates that these ghost stories are not just tools for inducing fear but serve as deep examinations of the American psyche, providing insights into the intricate relationship between historical background and literary expression.
