Curriculum as a fundamental document in the life of the school plays an important role in the course of realization of the educational process. If we, as a knowledge society, aspire to progress and aline education with the challenges of the modern world, it is necessary to first regulate and amend the documents used within the educational system. Currently valid curriculum directs all attention to content and as such should become part of the past. Pupils need stimulation, putting their needs and interests in the center and possibility to take part in the creation of teaching in which they participate daily. In order to achieve such an educational process, a hidden curriculum that signifies all the values, knowledge and attitudes that students learn at school can help us greatly because of the way the school is planned and how the school is organized.. The process of creating a modern school is time-consuming and demanding, and in Croatian practice a satisfactory degree has not yet been achieved. Except for the emphasis on what modern school should be like, this paper also deals with the values, knowledge and attitudes that students unconsciously adopt thanks to the organization of the school and the teaching approach. All these values are part of the educational process and as such are regulated by an unofficial document; hidden curriculum. The paper also presents the situation in Croatia along with guidelines for change in order to provide all the necessary preconditions for the creation of a modern school.
