During the Middle Ages Split experienced some significant changes in its spatial organization and it became a real medieval city by incorporating the oldest suburb into the town’s core. That happened with the building of the new city walls at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th c. and with the formation of the first districts in both old and new parts of the town. With this change Split doubled its area and eventually became a city with two centers. Even though the new city walls were built, some settlements were still outside their perimeter so that is how the oldest folk suburbs of Veli Varoš and Lučac have developed. Besides all of that, the beginning of the construction of cathedral’s belfry, one of Split’s symbols, was also important for the town and its construction ended during the Early Modern Period in the first half of the 16th c. As for the spatial development during the Early Modern Period, the town experienced some big changes which were conditioned by the Turkish danger and the trade. Venetian fortress was built already in the 15th c. in the western area of the city port, lazaretto was built at the end of the 16th c. in its eastern area and at the half of the 17th c. new fortification system was built. It consisted of the walls with bastions around the town and the two separate fortresses on locations Gripe and Bačvice.
