Throughout history the definition of a family has been approached from many different points of view by severeal authors (attempting to define it). Today, the most frequent definition of a family is a community of parents and their children that live together. The main task of a family is raising children. It is a complex and long lasting process during which parents face many challenges that often they are not aware of beforehand. Parenthood consists of various activities and skills that adults use to care about childcare and child-raising. A competent parent is considered to be a parent that benefits from environmental and personal stimuli to achieve good developmental results. Capacities and qualities of a parent are not innate but are acquired and developed during parenthood. There are four parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and uninvolved. Parenting styles are of crucial importance because they influence the holistic development of a child. The research part of this thesis shows the results of four interviews with parents that are by profession preschool teachers. The data subjects confirm the advantages in raising their own children due to their profession and they oftenly use authoritative parenting style.
