Figurative in the early Middle Ages is a theme in the history of art that has been approached many times and in different ways. Numerous theories and scientific research have sprung from the rich legacy of early medieval stonemasons. Accordingly, the appearance of the human figure in Croatia is accompanied from different perspectives. The multiplicity and quality of scientific works enables the reader to understand the complexity of the material because most of the monuments are not unambiguously interpreted, but they contain intrigues that are dealt with by domestic and foreign authors. The human figure disappears from stone monuments after the 8th century, only to be re-profiled in the 11th century and take center stage. Its features are: flatness, plastic processing and simplicity. The best examples of the re-profiled figure can be seen on the reliefs from the Split baptistery, fragments from the site of the Hollow Church in Solin, the relief from Klis and others. The characters appear in scenes known as Maiestas domini, and leading examples can be found on the gable from Sustipan, the relief from Klis, the portal from the church of Sv. Lovre in Zadar. In addition to the human figure itself, there is a planned stonemasonry based on narratological cycles. The best and most unique examples of narration in stone are certainly the plutes from the church of St. Nediljice and Sv. Lovre in Zadar. The reliefs of this period are accompanied by the tradition visible in shaping the edges using ornaments, the most commonly used of which are dog jumps and hooks, while innovation is most strongly manifested in the introduction of the human figure into the center of the depiction.
