Abstract
This paper examines the representation of artificial intelligence in David Mitchell’s novel Ghostwritten by placing it within the theoretical framework for analyzing science fiction developed by Darko Suvin. The first part of the analysis questions the plausibility of underlying assumptions behind the belief that anthropomorphic artificial intelligence is achievable, as well as the philosophical consequences of those beliefs as presented in the novel. The second part deals with limitations of artificial intelligence, as well as computational thinking in general, when faced with the complexity of Mitchell’s fictional world which resembles our own reality in many ways.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj rad analizira prikaz umjetne inteligencije u romanu Ghostwritten engleskog pisca Davida Mitchella stavljajući je u teoretski okvir za analizu znanstveno fantastičnih književnih djela koji je razvio Darko Suvin. Prvi dio analize dovodi u pitanje opravdanost temeljnih pretpostavki uvjerenja da je antropomorfna umjetna inteligencija izvediva, kao i filozofske posljedice tih uvjerenja. Drugi dio analize se bavi ograničenjima umjetne inteligencije, i općenito računalnog načina razmišljanja, kada se suočava sa složenošću Mitchellova izmišljenog svijeta koji u mnogočemu sliči našoj vlastitoj stvarnosti.
