This paper analyzes the basic points of the psychoanalytic idea in Freud and their further development and conclusion in Lacan. An explanation of terms such as sublimation, transmission, repression, the Oedipus complex, the Other, the Unconscious, dreams, etc. is given. After the psychoanalytic framework is set, the aim then is to show what a potential psychoanalytic reading of these ideas would look like based on Ranko Marinković’s “The Shared Bath” and Dubravka Ugrešić’s “Ministry of Pain”, and the intersections of psychoanalysis and literary representation that are worth studying in more detail. First of all, the paper seeks to answer the question that is deemed the fundamental opposition of psychoanalytic theory, and that is the question of the conscious and the unconscious in literary characters and authors themselves. The influence of the past on human development and the influence of the unconscious on the conscious and vice versa are both elaborated, which are also among the most important properties of Freud’s psychoanalysis. On the other hand, the novels are approached from the point of view of Lacan’s psychoanalysis, which pays close attention to language and its structure as a reflection of the unconscious and its ability to shape the subject. It was confirmed that the analyzed novels are a very much suitable read for this type of analysis in light of the fact that both the characters and the plot can be read from a psychoanalytic standpoint and therefore be used to analyze the complex thematic layers and conceptual categories necessary for the study of psychoanalytic theory.
