Tourism is often talked about in a positive tone, while ignoring many negative aspects of tourism, especially in relation to the local community (rising real estate prices, displacement due to this growth, lack of content suitable for local people or turning entire places into large hotels, declining industry countries and regions with the simultaneous growth of exclusively service activities, etc.). Since the seventies of the last century, when there was the emergence of mass tourism, tourism is beginning to denote an activity that negatively affects the area and thus leads to the destruction of tourist resources. This period marks the conflict between the development of tourism and space, ie the environment. The conducted research therefore deals with this very conflict (of tourism and space), ie it seeks to investigate the presence of gentrification due to uncontrolled tourism, as well as other consequences of touristification. The situation in world famous tourist destinations is analyzed and compared with the situation in Split. Results of the survey conducted in the period 13.6. - 26.7. 2021. showed that citizens of Split recognize the negativity brought by tourism, such as illegal construction, growth of the concrete coast and rising costs of living. Strategic documents from the official website of the city of Split were also analyzed showing an enormous increase in tourism in the last ten years in terms of the number of arrivals, accommodation capacity, number of cruisers, etc.
