Legal translators are confronted with the asymmetry of legal systems and have to deal with inconsistent categorizations and classifications. One of the fundamental problems in legal translation is the incongruity of concepts between legal systems. This thesis was introduced in order to specify multiword lexical entries (complex nominals) for English and Croatian, and to establish uniform (or inter-translatable) standards for describing multiword lexical entries at the level of syntax, morphosyntax and lexical semantics in legal domain. Around 30% of the overall number of MWEs extracted in 10 legal documents, 5 for each language respectively, were found to be the total equivalents of the given English MWEs. Thus, around 70% of the rest of the MWEs in English and Croatian parallel corpora present some form of the lexicalization idiosyncracies, The results proposed may have skewed the hypothesis that the legal language is highly standardized, and point to the possible domains within legi-linguistics that require an additional efforts in order to meet the requirements of standardization and clarity of legal language. This research, therefore, has as its goal to enhance the quality of translation in legal domain, to standardize the legal terminology, and to make contribution to the overall development of corpus linguistics and terminology databases, as well as to serve as a tool for the automatic term extraction.
