Abstract | Split je tradicijski miroljubiv grad, sa dugom antičkom i hrvatskom poviješću, duhom Mediterana, grad športa, kulture i posebnog humora.
Abstract (english) | Split is traditionally peaceful city, with a long and ancient Croatian history, the spirit of the Mediterranean, the city of sports, culture and special humor. However, all these features of the City were temporarily suppressed when citizens realize that the Serbian aggression could be danger to their city, dignity and peace. The main danger for Split, a seaside town on the Adriatic coast, came from the Yugoslav Navy and its military facilities which were stationed at the metropolitan area as well as nearby islands.
The Croatian army established brigades and military units in the Split area, and than step by step took over the military infrastructure of the Yugoslav Army. Yugoslav army officers responded to the resistance that citizens of Split provided in the May demonstration by a military assault on the city in November 15, 1991. By its direct shots at the old town the Yugoslav Army and Navy reveals its true „Greater Serbian“ character.
After the victory of the Croatian forces in the sea battle the Yugoslav Army and Navy left the Croatian seaside and Split ceased to be in danger of military attacks. The nearest open conflicts were located 60 km from the city. Since the mid-'92, the city of Split has contributed to the Croatian defense by the supply of humanitarian aid and a care for refugees and displaced persons. |
