The transfer of information is in the core of language development and its purpose. Oral history played a crucial role in our civilizational development. Sayings can be seen as little arhives of knowledge and wisdom of a culture, they contain important life lessons and warnings about the world and human character aiming to help each generation throughout their life. But it is important to raise the question, are sayings truly correct and trustworthy or are they simply mental shortcuts, heuristics to reach for when trying to make sense of a confusing situation. This study is a partial replication of a study done by McGlone et al. (2000). The purpose of this study was to explore how rhyming in sayings influences their perception of accuracy as descriptions of events and human behaviour. The sample consisted of 153 participants, ranging in age from 18 to 25 years. The research was conducted via an online questionnaire that consisted of evaluation statements and demographic questions. Participants were asked to assess the accuracy of presented statements. Three independent variables were type of saying (rhyming or non-rhyming), the modification of the saying (original or modified form) and the form of the instruction (instruction with or without a warning). The warning instruction asked the participants to focus their attention exclusively on the semantic meaning of the sentence and to ignore its poetic features. The results obtained by multivariate analysis of variance for mixed samples showed statistically significant main effects of rhyme and modification, and their interactions. The main effect of instruction and the interaction of the instruction variable with other variables was not found significant. The findings suggest that rhymed sayings were evaluated as more accurate in each case and the modification of the sayings influenced the accuracy of their assesment significantly. Focusing attention on the semantic meaning of the saying did not reduce the rhyme as a reason effect when giving accuracy estimates in the participants.
