Abstract
Given the increasing popularity and influence of Japanese animation in the West, there has been a plethora of academic work discussing anime and its translation. With anime being a unique and distinctive part of Japanese culture, it offers a glimpse into concepts that often have no direct equivalent in Western cultures. These concepts, i.e. culture-specific items, can be translated in different ways depending on their function or relevance to the plot. The translator’s task is to evaluate the status of the culture-specific item in the target culture and choose the appropriate translation procedure, keeping in mind the consequences of using that procedure, which is indicative of the overall strategy a translator employs – either domestication or foreignization. This study provides a qualitative analysis of the translation of culture-specific items in the subtitles for anime series available on Netflix, in order to show how the problem of cultural specificity is solved in spatially-restricted subtitles and what the potential implications of translating these terms in the target language and culture are, as seen on the example of subtitles in English, Portuguese, and Croatian.

Rastuća popularnost i utjecaj japanske animacije na Zapadu iznjedrili su razne znanstvene radove o anime žanru i njegovoj lokalizaciji. Kao jedan od trenutno najprepoznatljivijih elemenata japanske kulture, anime pruža jasan uvid u koncepte koji često nemaju izravne ekvivalente u zapadnjačkim kulturama. Ti se koncepti ili kulturno-specifični pojmovi mogu prevesti različitim prijevodnim postupcima ovisno o njihovoj funkciji ili značajnosti u određenom kontekstu. Prevoditelj je dužan utvrditi postoji li taj koncept u ciljnoj kulturi i odabrati prikladno prijevodno rješenje, imajući na umu potencijalne konotacije tog rješenja koje mogu ukazati na generalnu prijevodnu strategiju podomaćivanja ili postranjivanja. Ovo istraživanje nudi kvalitativnu analizu prijevoda kulturno-specifičnih pojmova u podslovima za anime serije dostupne na Netflixu s ciljem utvrđivanja kako se problem kulturne specifičnosti rješava u prostorno ograničenim podslovima i koje su potencijalne implikacije prijevoda tih izraza u ciljnom jeziku i kulturi.
Abstract (portuguese)
A crescente popularidade e influência da animação japonesa no Ocidente inspirou uma grande quantidade de trabalhos académicos sobre anime e a sua localização. Sendo o anime uma parte distinta da cultura japonesa, este tipo de animação oferece um vislumbre de conceitos que muitas vezes não possuem equivalentes diretos nas culturas ocidentais. Estes conceitos, chamados por itens específicos da cultura podem ser traduzidos de diferentes formas, dependendo da sua função ou relevância para o enredo da matéria audiovisual. A tarefa do tradutor neste caso consiste em avaliar o sentido do termo na cultura de chegada e escolher um procedimento de tradução adequado, tendo em conta as implicações da utilização deste mesmo procedimento que podem indicar a estratégia global que o tradutor emprega – a domesticação ou a estrangeirização. Este estudo fornece uma análise qualitativa da tradução de itens específicos da cultura nas legendas de séries anime disponíveis na Netflix, a fim de mostrar como o problema da especificidade cultural é resolvido em legendas espacialmente restritas e quais são as potenciais implicações da tradução desses termos na língua e cultura de chegada, como visto nos exemplos das legendas em inglês, português e croata.
