Abstract
Prije dolaska kršćanstva i ostalih vjera koje danas prevladavaju svijetom, pojedinci izajednice su vjerovali u ono što mi danas nazivamo mitologijom. Mitovima su objašnjavali nastanak svijeta te njegov kraj. Osim eshatologije u kontekstu svršetka svijeta, u mitologiji je prisutna i eshatologija vezana uz smrt živih bića. Kako bi objasnili smrt, ljudi su razvili koncept podzemnog svijeta i njegovog vladara. Kod Slavena je to Veles, koji vlada Navom, podzemljem zamišljenim kao livada. U nordijskoj mitologiji vladarica podzemlja je Hel, koja upravlja tajanstvenom i mračnom regijom Nifelheim. Iako ove dvije ličnosti dijele neke sličnosti u nekim aspektima se i razlikuju. Najočitija razlika je Velesova dvojaka priroda prema kojoj je bog smrti, ali isto tako i bog stoke. Hel je, s duge strane, predstavljena isključivo u ulozi vladarice podzemlja. Uvelike se razlikuju po svojim ulogama i percepcijama u narodnoj svijesti.
Abstract (english)
Before the arrival of Christianity and other religions that now dominate the world, our ancestors believed in what we now refer to as mythology. Through myths, they explained the creation of the world and its end. Apart from eschatology in the context of the end of the world, mythology also contains eschatology related to death. To explain death, people developed the concept of the underworld and its ruler. For the Slavs, this is Veles, who rules Nav, the underworld envisioned as a meadow. In Norse mythology, the ruler of the underworld is Hel, who governs the mysterious and dark region of Niflheim. Although these two figures share some similarities regarding their roles as the rulers of the underworld, they differ in some aspects as well. The most obvious difference is that Veles has a dual nature as the god of death but also as the god of cattle. Hel, on the other hand, is represented only as the ruler of the underworld. They differ greatly in their roles and perceptions in folk consciousness.
