This paper focuses on the phenomenon of corporate social (ir)responsibility in Croatia from a sociological perspective. The paper presents the most important theoretical approaches to corporate social responsibility with an emphasis on stakeholder theory and institutional theory, as well as key factors of corporate social responsibility in contemporary society such as globalization, change in societal expectations, the growing power of multinational corporations, the social production of risks and the rise of global civil society. The paper presents research on corporate social responsibility in Croatia, the role of the institutional framework, the most important stakeholders and factors specific to Croatian society, such as negative consequences related to transition and privatization, politicization of the economy, high rates of corruption and opportunism, distrust towards companies as well as a growing influence of civil society on the development of corporate social responsibility in Croatia. The paper analyzes corporate social (ir)responsibility of companies Heineken Hrvatska d.o.o. and HEP d.d., their responsibility for economic, environmental and social aspects of their business, risk production and relations with stakeholdes, mainly civil society, the local community and the media. Through case studies and analysis of secondary sources we examined the presence of institutional determinants of corporate social responsibility in Croatia, i.e. conditions that determine the probability that companies will behave in a socially responsible manner. It has been shown that corporate social responsibility in Croatian companies is present only to a certain extent, but it is not implemented strategically nor systematically in the long-term.
