This paper deals with the analysis of diminutives in the Russian and Croatian languages. Both languages, as part of the Slavic language group, are rich in a system of diminutives, reflecting their shared linguistic heritage. This paper explores the morphological processes involved in the formation of diminutives, with special emphasis on the variety of suffixes used in their creation and their application across different genders and word types. In addition to morphological aspects, the semantic and pragmatic roles of diminutives are also analyzed. While diminutives often express small size or quantity, this paper shows that they also carry emotional and cultural value. In communication with children, diminutives play a key role in expressing tenderness and affection, while in certain contexts, they can have negative connotations or convey irony. The paper also pays attention to the use of diminutives in specific contexts, such as advertisements in Russian, where they contribute to creating an informal tone. In conclusion, the need for further research in the field of diminutives, especially in Croatian, is emphasized in order to provide a more thorough overview of their semantic and pragmatic complexities.
