Abstract
This master’s thesis examines the use of speech acts in the letters of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, with a focus on directness and indirectness. Prior to the analysis, the linguistic devices expected to influence directness and indirectness are explained, along with other key terms. Additionally, the discussion addresses letters as a form of discourse, the concept of context, and relevant politeness theories. The search for directness and indirectness in the letters is done through linguistic devices such as the imperative mood, modal verbs, passive voice, abstract nouns and other, less conventional tools. Ambiguous examples will also be addressed and with them, multiple interpretations may be possible. The analysis reveals that all devices mentioned can contribute to both direct speech acts (DSAs) and indirect speech acts (ISAs) which then serve different communicative purposes in the analysed letters, including enhancing or negating politeness.
