In this thesis paper, author examines the image of the Ottomans in Croatian antiturkish writings and orations in 15th and 16th century. Primary goals were to detect positive and negative qualifications in antiturkish writings ranging from 1493 until 1541. During this period most of works are produced, mostly in the form of speech. The pragmatic function of those speeches of Croatian humanists was seeking help in the fight against the Ottomans, and in that were used powerful images and descriptions who should cause certain emotions (fear, hatred) in readers and listeners. These images had religious and political/ideological purpose that was dependent on the recipient of the message. That purpose in seen in dominant motifs in speeches which are: 1. Ottomans are God's punishment for Christian sins 2. Antemurale christianitatis motif 3. Motif of devastated Croatia which is warning to other countries The work will emphasize the importance of crusading polemic and its aspects, notions and prejudices that have significantly impacted on the European experience of the Other as something distant, alien and dangerous. The medieval authors have supported the idea that Europe is the only true heir of Christianity and anyone who was not a Christian considered the enemy. In this conclusion rests medieval European conception of the Other and on whose foundation will develop a civilization and religious hostility in following centuries.
