Although the number of women at leadership positions increased over the past few years, they are still a minority. The literature cites various causes of their underrepresentation, and one of them in recent times is motivation to lead. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine gender differences in motivation to lead and behavioral styles associated with leadership behavior. The study involved 187 final year students of Zagreb's School of Economics and Management (47% of women). The data was collected using an online form of the "Grit Point designed by SOVA Assessment Ltd." questionnaire, consisting of three parts. The first part of the questionnaire refers to demographic variables, followed by a questionnaire that measures eight behavioral styles associated with leadership behavior and a questionnaire that measures eight motivations which provides an insight into what an individual wants and needs to get out of their work in order to be engaged and motivated. The results showed that men are more motivated to lead. However, when eight motives are ranked in order of importance, motivation to lead is on the same place for both genders. It was also found that men are more involved in the behavioural styles: "leading and influencing", "analytical orientation" and "adaptability and resilience". Gender differences in behavioral styles "strategic focus", "development others", "empathy", "planning and organizin" and "drive to achieve" were not found. The results of this study emphasize the need to investigate in more detail how gender differences in motivation to lead and leadership behavior are connected to representation of women in leadership positions.
