The Roman city of Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. It was discovered again in the 18th century but first scientific excavations were conducted in the second half of the 19th century. Since then over 5000 graffiti have been discovered in the city. Their topics are various: from simple greetings to dialogues between two or more people, political and gladiatorial advertisements and graffiti advertising prostitutes. The topic of this paper is the social position of women in Pompeii based on its numerous graffiti. The graffiti have been divided based on their length and topic. The first, and the most numerous, type are graffiti that give us insight into everyday life of women. These can be further divided based on length to graffiti consisiting only of names, then greetings and, finally, longer graffiti with various topics. The second type are political advertisements (programmata) and the third are graffiti related to prostitution. For all these graffiti there is also the question of their authorship. Women as authors have only recently been studied and it is still impossible to tell for certain whether the author is male or female. Concerning the position of women, graffiti give us only a small look into their lives and it is mostly from the male viewpoint.
