Abstract
This thesis deals with students’ perception of selected translation solutions in the translations of names in two Croatian translations of The Lord of the Rings. Croatian translators Zlatko Crnković and Marko Maras approached the translation of names of characters and places differently and there are significant differences in their translations of the trilogy; namely, Maras adhered more strictly to Tolkien’s translation instructions and tried to find TL translation equivalents for most names, while Crnković kept the SL original names even in some cases where Tolkien advised otherwise. The study shows that students generally prefer Crnković’s translation solutions. Maras’ translation solutions tended to get better grades by students who took classes on translation compared to those who did not, while Crnković’s translation solutions were graded similarly by both groups.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj diplomski rad bavi se subjektivnim doživljajem studenata prijevodnih rješenja u prijevodima imena u dva hrvatska prijevoda Gospodara prstenova. Hrvatski prevoditelji Zlatko Crnković i Marko Maras različito su pristupili prevođenju imena likova i mjesta te postoji značajna razlika u njihovim prijevodima trilogije. Naime, Maras se nastojao pridržavati Tolkienovih uputa za prevođenje imena i pronalaziti hrvatske prijevodne ekvivalente za sva imena, dok je Crnković ponekad zadržavao imena u izvornom obliku čak i tamo gdje je Tolkien savjetovao drugačije. Istraživanje pokazuje da studenti općenito gledano više vole Crnkovićeva prijevodna rješenja. Marasova rješenja u pravilu su većim ocjenama ocijenili studenti koji su slušali kolegije o prevođenju nego oni koji nisu, dok su Crnkovićeva rješenja i jedni i drugi ocijenili slično.
