This thesis presents the strategy for archives in the digital world and the ways in which this strategy is brought to life. The main points of the strategy are related to promoting the position of archives within the society and staying in touch with the latest technologies, as well as the users' demands in the digital world. Since archives are more and more dealing with digital records, the ground is set for the cooperation between the archival science and the IT sector in order to allow for a secure archival records management. Next, the thesis presents technologies used in archival holdings and records management, as well as examples and different case studies in which such technologies are used. Since, along with the appearance and growing influence of technology, new problems which archivists have to deal with arise, the InterPARES Trust project is introduced as well. This project deals with one of the main issues related to digital records, and that is their trustworthiness. Furthermore, the new role of archives and the direction in which they should move and develop is analysed, with reference to formal education and training of archivists as well.
