This paper discusses and emphasizes the importance of teacher's intercultural competence. The modern world consists of daily migrations and interactions of people from different cultures, religions, races and nationalities. Today's society is multicultural, and individuals have an increasing need of possessing intercultural competence. The great importance of possessing intercultural competence is also reflected in education, with teachers whose classes are becoming increasingly heterogeneous as students come from different parts of the world. The first, theoretical part of the paper explains the different competence of teachers, and then problematizes the concept of culture and interculturalism. Then, intercultural competence, its various dimensions and models are defined, and attention is paid to the issue of measuring intercultural competence. The last chapter of the theoretical part tries to explain the importance of teacher's intercultural competence and the importance of teacher's education for their acquisition. The second part of the paper is empirical, and represents a qualitative research aimed at investigating whether teachers in Croatia have intercultural competence and what are the most important factors in their acquisition. Six teachers participated in the study, and a semi-structured interview procedure was used. The results of the research showed that teachers possess a certain level of intercultural competence, but also that it's necessary to introduce new courses at the faculties of teacher education in which they will acquire intercultural competence.
