Abstract
Translating is not an easy task and a particular challenge is translating texts for children audiences. One of the most prominent issues in translating any type of text is the translation of culture-specific elements and when dealing with children’s literature in particular, it is the treatment of proper names because of the importance they carry in this type of a text. When facing a culture-specific content, translators usually opt for either preserving the element in its original form, and maintaining the source-orientation of the original, or substituting the element with those the target culture is familiar with and making it a target-oriented text. This research analyses the translation of proper names in the Croatian translation of J.K. Rowlingʼs first book in the Harry Potter series - Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, translated into Croatian as Harry Potter i kamen mudraca. Specifically, it analyses whether the names of characters and the names of places in the Croatian text are more source-oriented (foreignized) or target-oriented (domesticized). The data, formed of the names of characters and the names of places collected from the original English text and its translation into Croatian was analysed using the strategies for the translation of proper names proposed by Theo Hermans - copying, transcribing, substitution, translation, omission and combinations of different strategies. The study shows that the names of characters are, in fact, more source-oriented than adapted to the target audience, but the names of places, however, were adapted and mostly target-oriented.

Prevođenje nije jednostavan zadatak, a posebni je izazov prevođenje tekstova namijenjenih dječjoj publici. Jedan od najčešćih problema u prevođenju svih vrsta tekstova je prevođenje kulturno-specifičnih pojmova, a naročito prijevod vlastitih imena kada se radi o prijevodima dječje književnosti, zbog posebne važnosti koju oni imaju u takvom tekstu. Prilikom prevođenja kulturno-specifičnih pojmova, prevoditelj obično odlučuje ili zadržati u izvornom obliku (otuđivanje) ili ga zamijeniti pojmom poznatim ciljnoj kulturi (podomaćivanje). Ovo istraživanje analizira prijevod vlastitih imena u hrvatskom prijevodu prve knjige iz serijala o Harry Potteru, autorice J.K. Rowling - Harry Potter i kamen mudraca. Točnije, proučava je li prijevod imena likova i imena mjesta bliži izvornoj kulturi (otuđen) ili je bliži ciljnoj publici (odomaćen). Podaci, koji se sastoje od imena likova i imena mjesta iz izvornog, engleskog teksta i hrvatskog prijevoda su analizirani koristeći se strategijama za prijevod vlastitih imena Thea Hermansa - preuzimanje, transkribiranje, zamjenjivanje, prijevod, ispuštanje ili izostavljanje te kombinacije raznih strategija. Istraživanje pokazuje da u prijevodu imena likova prevladava tendencija otuđivanja, a u prijevodu imena mjesta odomaćivanja. Što daje zaključiti da su imena likova bliža kulturi izvornika nego ciljnoj kulturi, dok su imena likova prilagođena ciljnoj publici.
