This thesis will focus on the meaning and cultural importance of Jewish biblical names, we will examine and analyse the meaning and importance of the more prominent biblical figures from the Book of Genesis, especially important names such as: Adam, Eve, Noa, Abraham, Sarah, etc. The intention is to make the reader aware that names’ meanings are sometimes hidden and that one should look into the true meaning and origin of a name to better understand it. The principal aim of this thesis is not to focus solely on the names from the Book of Genesis, but also to get to know other names ascribed to God, such as: Elohim, YHWH (Yahweh), Adonai, El Elyon, El Shaddai, Jehovah-Rohi and others. We will deal with the specificities of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet and their mystic explanations. Our aim is to draw attention to the problems surrounding translating the Bible, such as the loss of authenticity and names’ real meanings, and finally to focus on Hebrew names given in more modern times, as well as the specific personal names most popular with Zagreb Jews between the start of the 19th century to the end of World War II. One of the chapters will describe the naming practices in Judaism, as well as the naming practices of Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews. The main source for our examination and analysis of names’ meanings is quotes from the Bible. We have also used numerous books, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, articles, works and websites. The thesis will end with a conclusion.
