The goal of this theoretical work is to emphasise the pedagogical significance of outlining and subverting heteronormativity as a dominant oppressive issue in education. This work offers a critical analysis of the role of school in reproducing dominant ideologies and discourses which, through curriculum, limit teaching on sexual and gender differences. Schools are identified as places where the issue of sexuality is generally a taboo treated as a delicate and controversial matter, while sexual and gender differences are invisible and pathological, or sanctioned by dominant discourses and curriculum. Basic terms important for understanding this specific issue are defined as well as more inclusive terminology which should be introduced more systematically at all levels of education system. The work presents theoretical benefits of inclusion of queer theoretical insights into the education system with the aim of achieving a deeper understanding of the specific issue of sexual and gender differences. It also emphasises the role of the educator as an instrument of social change in the direction of fighting against all forms of discrimination, prejudices and stereotypes and challenging the heteronormativity status quo in education. This work puts forward possible ways of subverting the above described state of affairs by using visual art in LGBT inclusive teaching. An example of a framework which teachers could strategically use when addressing controversial issues regarding sexual and gender differences, together with social inequality and generally oppression is articulated. The work thus explores potentials of utilizing visual art in teaching with the goal of reconciliating the dialogue on sexual and gender differences and inclusive LGBT representation, as well as putting heteronormativity in question. It is suggested that further intervention into the direction of reforming teacher training system is necessary by introducing intercultural perspective which enables the acquisition of theoretical and practical insights into LGBTIQ topic.
