The theme of this graduate thesis is children's games in the Middle Ages. My thesis aims to define the importance and role of children's play in medieval everyday life to understand it as a cultural phenomenon. The topic is comparatively analytically covered by an interdisciplinary review of scientific papers and historical sources in the fields of European and Croatian historiography, archaeology, philosophy, pedagogy, psychology, and sociology related to children's games in the Middle Ages. The review of the scientific papers and historical sources aims to show that medieval games are useful as a lens for examining social, ethical, and political issues, and how 'ludic' medieval texts and works of art mediate cultural identity and interpersonal interaction in different cultural institutions. The thesis will review how the games, through their manifestation in medieval literature, art, and culture, were understood by writers, players, audiences, and communities in the Middle Ages. Through a comparative analysis of the city's laws and norms of behavior, the thesis will show how the games permeated a diverse range of medieval social institutions and social classes in such a way that the games, as motifs, symbols, and texts, acted as markers of identity, reputation, and status. All the above aims to show the interweaving of medieval everyday life and gaming culture through children's upbringing and education. Finally, in this thesis, I will compare the similarities and differences of ways of leisure time in the modern age and the Middle Ages.
