The Sámi are people who have traditionally lived in the north of Sweden and other Nordic countries. With the expansion of Sweden in the 16th century, the colonization of the area began and the Sámi lost various rights and freedom. They were forced to work in mines, convert to Christianity and go through assimilation into Swedish society. The state imposed various laws which determined who was granted rights. The 1886 Reindeer Grazing Act and its amendment in 1928 had the biggest influence because these laws defined the Sámi as nomads and only those Sámi who were reindeer herders were granted the right to land. Sweden also had a dark history of eugenics and racial cleansing attempts. The attitude towards the Sámi was very similar to anti-Semitism until World War II. After Sametinget (Sámi Parliament) had been founded and the Sámi were recognized as an indigenous people, they were given some rights back, but this does not mean that discrimination has completely disappeared. Even today, they face racism in all spheres of life. The mass media has a huge influence on the way the Sámi are perceived in the Swedish society, but the media rarely shows the real truth. The 2016 film Sameblod (Sami Blood) portrayed a very realistic and shocking picture of discrimination against the Sámi.
