Sports betting is a type of gambling that is becoming ever more prevalent in the Croatian society. The alarming data shows that a large percentage of Croats place bets on monthly basis (17,4% of men population). Unfortunately, this trend is visible with high school students as well, 72,9% of whom report to have placed a sport bet at least once in their life. A worrisome 12,9% of high school students show severe gambling problems. The aim of this research was to determine how some predictors (locus of control, cognitive distortions, coping mechanisms and cognitive styles) might affect the frequency of one's sports betting and whether the frequency of betting is related to gender and problem gambling severity. The research was conducted online, with a convenience sample of 433 participants, aged 16-71 years. The results of the hierarchical regression analysis on male sample confirm previously found positive correlations between the sports betting and the illusion of control, as well as the negative relation of sports betting and coping mechanisms directed towards problem-solving. On top of these results, a positive moderate correlation has been confirmed between the betting frequency and addiction to sports betting. These results could help in early identification of individuals susceptible to risky behaviors, as well as with the addiction-prevention interventions aimed at adolescents and adults.
