Cancel culture is a fairly new phenomenon that has spread very quickly over the past few years. The existence and intensive use of social media platforms, as well as the development of online activism, are crucial for the development of cancel culture. Cancel culture fount its root in political correctness and the need social media users have for it. The event that triggered the rapid development of cancel culture is the #MeToo movement. The #MeToo movement is an online movement in which women shared their experiences of men in positions of power and the sexual harassment they suffered from them; the reason why that movement was crucial for the development of cancel culture is the fact that some of the men accused under the #MeToo movement ended up suffering serious consequences for their actions. After that came the #IsOverParty, representing a trend on Twitter in which users expressed their disagreement with something that primarily famous personalities said or did which led the social media users to declare them "over". Over time, cancel culture became very widespread, and "cancelling" starts to be used not only in the context of celebrities, but also private individuals and large corporations, which are affected by cancel culture differently than celebrities. The goal of this research was to find out the attitudes of active users of social media platforms in the Republic of Croatia towards cancel culture The research was conducted using the survey method, using Google Forms, and the online survey was shared over social media platforms. The sample consisted of 305 users of social media platforms in the Republic of Croatia. The results of the research show us that respondents consider cancel culture as a way of holding users responsible for their behavior rather than punishing users who do not deserve it. Also, the results tell us that familiarity with cancel culture varies slightly, 46% of respondents are very familiar with cancel culture while 54% are less familiar. The majority of people have neither a positive nor a negative attitude towards cancel culture, while those who have a negative attitude slightly outnumber those who have a positive attitude. Also, the results of the research show that respondents self-censor on social media platforms due to fear of others reactions.
