Abstract (english) This master's thesis is an attempt at identifying and explaining the unequal and chaotic form of the Encyclopédie of Diderot and d’Alembert which gives shape to its infrastructure. Under the appearance of an encyclopedia, this work is, in terms of genre, exceptionally difficult to pinpoint, but what is for sure is that it is not a canonical encyclopedia. What it is, is a gathering of the contributors to the Republic of Letters, a catalogue of the genres particular to its century and the preceding century as well as a panoply of techniques used to hold this mass of texts together, into a single, coherent whole. That which makes the Encyclopédie function as a unified text, and not as an anthology of 70,000 articles thrown together, are its alphabetisation (the arbitrary order of the articles) of the order of the knowledge amassed therein, and the system of encyclopedic references, both of which are visible at the tail-end of most articles. The ropes and beams which hold together the 20,000,000 words of the Encyclopédie form, together, the system of co-systems which make up what we propose as being the infrastructure of the Encyclopédie. In a work as vast as this, synoptic only up to a point, one can talk of infrastructure, and of the (para-)literary effects gained by it. The Encyclopédie is not a work half-way between literature and science (and by choice these two magisteria are differentiated as little as possible), as it is the two at once; one does not exclude the possibility of the other.
