The Paris Cathedral is one of the buildings in Europe that are currently under the public spotlight. Reconstruction is taking place after the fire in 2019, which damaged the cathedral and moved the public. Notre-Dame is a Gothic cathedral that was built from the 12th to the 14th century. It has an important place in the history of art. During the Revolution, the cathedral was transformed into the Temple of Reason and was damaged in the spirit of the Revolution. The most famous is probably the destruction of the gallery of kings on the western facade. The cathedral was in a very bad condition and inspired Victor Hugo to write the novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, which won over the public and made them aware of the importance and value of the cathedral. Hugo is considered responsible for the idea of restoring the cathedral in the 19th century. At that time, the French state services for the protection of monuments were developed, which laid the foundations of protection and ensured the preservation of the Paris cathedral. The stylistic restoration of the cathedral began in 1843 and was finished in 1864. The works were led by the architects Jean-Baptiste Lassus and Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc. The goal was to restore the cathedral to its original integrity. The influence of Viollet-le-Duc lasted for a long time and his work served as an example in other stylistic restorations carried out at the time. Until the 21st century, the cathedral remained in good condition and, fortunately, was not damaged during the two world wars. In 2019, a fire broke out on the roof of the cathedral. The roof and the transept suffered the majority of the damage, and the tower of the transept collapsed. The damage is currently being repaired and there are plans to reconstruct the cathedral as it was restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. The work is led by the architect Phillippe Villeneuve, and the end of the renovation is planned for 2024.
