Extraction is a thermal separation process which is used in various industries due to its mild process conditions. The most commonly used solvents are volatile organic solvents, which often represent an environmental problem. In order to make the process environmentally friendly, many investigations are devoted to the development of new solvents. Studies have shown that environmentally acceptable deep eutectic solvents can be an adequate replacement for volatile organic solvents. The goal of this work was to purify pyrolysis oil using deep eutectic solvents. Crude pyrolysis oil, obtained by the pyrolysis of waste tires, contains impurities and polluting elements that need to be removed. For this purpose, four different eutectic solvents (two choline chloride based and two potassium carbonate based solvents) were prepared which were mixed with pyrolytic oil in various ratios. A suitable solvent was required to efficiently, with a minimum amount, purify the pyrolysis oil. This includes reducing acidity, amount of water, sulfur, chlorine and nitrogen. The results show that choline chloride based solvents are not suitable for purification of pyrolysis oil. On the other hand, potassium carbonate based solvents proved to be very successful. These eutectic solvents have shown great efficiency in reducing polluting elements, except in reducing sulfur whose amount has remained the same. From an economic and ecological point of view, DES4 in a ratio of 0.1:1 to pyrolytic oil proved to be the best and most cost-effective. The reason for this is the use of very small amounts of solvent for the successful purification of pyrolysis oil.
