This thesis arises from theoretical research of present knowledges on foam granulation process. Foam granulation is described as a growing scientific discipline with the intention of process development and promising industrial use. Concise overview of knowledges starts with a concept stride that necessarily replaces empiricism with a mechanistic approach for the goal of better understanding of granulation phenomenon at each scrutiny level. Granulation classification is described from the perspective of achieving the stochastic movement of powder material and of binder delivery way. Foam granulation uses a novel binder delivery method that is presented as a promising alternative to conventional processes of wet granulation. Foam quality is recognized as a parameter that significantly affects on the outcome of the foam granulation process. The difference from other binder delivery methods might be seen using the description of nucleation and wetting mechanisms in the process of foam granulation. Foam granulation is compared with spray granulation using the perspective of mechanistic description of the phenomenon. Phenomenological consideration of foam granulation points to the process complexity and the essence for application of detailed mechanistic descriptions and understanding of granulation phenomenon at each scrutiny level. The possibility for scale-up of this novel granulation process to industrial scale is scrutinized as well.
