The detected presence of pharmaceuticals in the environment presents potential danger for organisms, even in nanogramic concentrations, due to their biological activity and toxic degradation products. The main source is wastewater where these compunds are continuously arriving. Due to low efficiency of existing wastewater treatment mehods in this field, some new economical and environmentally acceptable methods whose application shouldn't produce any toxic byproducts, are being developed. One of the proposed methods is application of ferrate (VI), as a multiple function chemical agent – an oxidazing and coagulation agent which is, along with it's high oxidation potential, often called „a green oxidant“. The aim of this study was to investigate the application of ferrates (VI) as an oxidation agent for wastewater treatment, more precisely for removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater. Response surface methodology (RSM) defines optimal experimental conditions for removal of pharmaceutical diclofenac (DCF) in batch reactor by application of K2FeO4. Degradation rate and removal of carbamazepine during the process is monitored by some analytical techniques such as high performance liquid chromatography, as well as by determination of physico-chemical indicators, COD (Chemical oxigen demand), TOC (Total organic compound). In this paper, removal rate of pharmaceutical diclofenac of 95,1 % was achieved. It is estimated that the pH value of solution and the concentration of ferrates have almost even level of importance and influence for the process, while the optimal pH value is 5 and concentration of ferrates is 75 mg/L.
