Increasing consumption of water for industrial and domestic needs is leading to it’s shortage in many countries. Many of today's industries, of which textile is one of the largest in the world, are now facing and struggling with increased costs of water supply and treatment processes, as well as strict controls on wastewater discharge from industrial sources, which usually contains heavy pollutants. Due to the above, there is a crucial need for treatment of wastewater from the textile industry, which now represents an attractive option for environmental protection and sustainable industrial development. Among various technologies developed for this purpose, membrane processes that guarantee acceptable quality of wastewater intended for reuse in textile industry process, were accentuated. The aim of this study was the reuse of textile wastewater for the purpose of dyeing process. A membrane bioreactor (MBR) permeate was treated by ultrafiltration (UF) at a working pressure of 10 bar using a 2 kDa flat sheet membrane. The quality of MBR and UF permeates was determined by analysis of the following physico - chemical parameters: turbidity, conductivity (κ), chemical oxygen demand (COD), average color (436, 525 and 620 nm), pH, and concentration of total organic carbon (TOC). The dyeing process was performed with UF permeate and tap water used in the factory and the dyeing efficiency was determined by measuring the zeta potential and spectrophotometric analysis of knitted cotton fabrics. Physico - chemical parameters of colored tap water samples, taken during the dyeing and rinsing process, were also monitored. The results of physico - chemical analysis indicated increased values of MBR permeate parameters and the need for additional UF treatment. UF treatment achieved a significant reduction in turbidity (98.8%), average color (91.4%), COD (90.4%), and TOC (77.4%). A slightly lower percentage of conductivity reduction was obtained (41.7%). Based on the results of zeta potential and spectrophotometric analysis, a better coloration of the knitted cotton fabric was obtained with UF permeate.
