Abstract
Medicinski otpad obično se odnosi na nusproizvod zdravstvenih aktivnosti u bolnicama i drugim pružateljima zdravstvenih usluga, zdravstvenim istraživačkim centrima i medicinskim laboratorijima. Zajedno s rastom zdravstvene industrije i poboljšanjem zdravstvenih usluga, proizvodnja medicinskog otpada naglo se povećala u posljednjih nekoliko desetljeća. Gospodarenje otpadom je od velike važnosti zbog potencijalnih opasnosti za okoliš i zdravlje ljudi. Medicinski otpad sadrži potencijalno zarazne i opasne materijale (patogene mikroorganizme, virus humane imunodeficijencije, viruse hepatitisa B i C, antibiotike, citotoksične lijekove, otapala, teške metale i oksidanse). Nepravilna obrada i odlaganje takvog otpada može rezultirati ozbiljnim posljedicama za zdravlje ljudi koje proizlaze iz ozljeda, infekcija te onečišćenja okoliša. U mnogim zemljama u razvoju medicinski se otpad često miješa s krutim komunalnim otpadom i zatim se odlaže na odlagališta. Stoga je upravljanje medicinskim otpadom predmet velike brige stručnjaka za gospodarenje otpadom, regulatorne agencije za okoliš i stručnjaka za zdravlje okoliša. Ovaj završni rad daje pregled praksi gospodarenja medicinskim otpadom, uključujući definicije, klasifikaciju i stope stvaranja otpada, potencijalne rizike i putove te metode obrade odnosno zbrinjavanja.
Abstract (english)
Medical waste usually refers to a by-product of healthcare activities in hospitals and other healthcare providers, healthcare research centers and medical laboratories. Along with the growth of the healthcare industry and the improvement of healthcare services, the production of medical waste has increased rapidly over the past few decades. Waste management is of great importance due to the potential risks to the environment and human health. Medical waste contains potentially infectious and hazardous materials (pathogenic microorganisms, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B and C viruses, antibiotics, cytotoxic drugs, solvents, heavy metals and oxidants). Improper treatment and disposal of such waste can result in serious consequences for human health by injuries, infections and environmental pollution. In many developing countries, medical waste is often mixed with municipal solid waste and then disposed of in landfills. Therefore, medical waste management is a matter of great concern to waste management professionals, environmental regulatory agencies and environmental health professionals. This thesis provides an overview of medical waste management practices, including definitions, classification and generation rates of the waste, potential risks and pathways, treatment and disposal methods.
