Superhydrophobic surfaces are defined as surfaces that have a high water contact angle and low contact angle hysteresis. The phenomenon of superhydrophobicity was discovered during the study of unique properties of the lotus leaf, namely its ability to self-cleanse and its non-wetting properties ("water repellent"). This discovery led to the lotus leaf (NelumboNucifera) becoming one of the best known natural superhydrophobic surfaces. The water repellent properties of its leaves, including the self-cleaning mechanism, became known as the "lotus effect". Natural superhydrophobic surfaces served as inspiration for the modelling and fabrication of synthetic (man-made) superhydrophobic surfaces. In order to develop surfaces with the best possible performance compared to the properties of natural surfaces, various methods for producing superhydrophobic surfaces have been developed. Many methods and techniques have been used with the same goal: to create superhydrophobic surfaces with suitable properties for their application in various industries. In this research, the following plants were used: Anthurium, Sempervivum tectorum, Hosta, Salvia officinalis, Coffea Arabica, Prunus laurocerasus, Tradescantia zebrina, Ficus carica and Jacobae maritima. The surface properties of the leaves were studied by measuring the contact angle with water as a test liquid. This means that the hydrophobicity of the leaf surface was investigated. In addition, the natural living conditions of these plants and the different morphology of their surfaces were analysed, including their effect on (or correlation with) the non-wetting properties, i.e. the phenomena of (super)hydrophobicity.
