Pharmaceuticals are a new type of pollutants that pose a major environmental risk because of their high chemical stability, toxicity and resistance to biodegradation as well as degradation by the influence of solar radiation. Conventional water treatment methods are not designed for removal of pharmaceuticals, so new methods are being developed for their more effective removal. This paper is based on the removal of pharmaceuticals escitalopram i diazepam using UV/H2O2 and UV/Na2S2O8 advanced oxidation processes (AOP), depending on the concentration ratio of model pollutants and oxidants. The influence of the concentration of the oxidants H2O2 and Na2S2O8 on the rate of decomposition of escitalopram and diazepam at different ratios of pharmaceutical: oxidannts (1:100, 1:300 and 1:500) was observed by HPLC. The given results show that the decomposition of the escitalopram and diazepam is following the first order kinetics. Also, with increasing concentration of oxidants, for both UV/H2O2 and UV/Na2S2O8 systems, the rate of decomposition of selected pharmaceutics decreases, as more radicals are formed that begin to react with each other and form non-reactive species. The more effective removal process for escitalopram and diazepam is UV/ Na2S2O8 at the escitalopram: oxidant = 1:100 ratio and, diazepam: oxidant = 1:300.
