With a sudden increase of life standard and upon the society’s and civilization progress, people are faced with a demanding life pace which is accompanied by an increasing number of different traumas and diseases. The implantation is recognized to be one of the most effective strategies, in both general and dental medicine, for maintaining the quality of life and prolonging life expectancy. Due to multidisciplinary research in the field of materials science, quality of implants has thrived: from first implants being stone or ivory made, gold implants in the 16th century to iridium, tantalum and different alloys which appeared in the beginning of the 20th century. Today the metal implants with modified surfaces are being used ensuring an aesthetical impression in addition to full functionality. Also, they possess outstanding physical and mechanical properties and exhibit fast and excellent osseointegration. In this work metal implant materials used in orthodontics have been described as well as methods for testing their properties. Since dental implant therapy requires putting a foreign object directly into contact with live tissue/jaw bones, characteristics of the implant surface are very important. After implantation, biocorrosion can occur resulting in the ion release from the metal surface. These ions can be absorbed into blood through the mucous membrane or by saliva swallowing which can lead to unwanted consequences such as allergic reactions and/or inflammation. The cause of the highest number of mistakes and implant rejection in dental medicine is the false material choice. Accordingly, it’s very important to perform research of implant materials in conditions which will simulate oral cavity conditions. The aim of this work is to introduce the interaction of metal implants with their physiological surroundings and also to explore advantages and disadvantages of implant materials used in orthodontics.
