The need to reduce emissions of the volatile organic compounds (VOC) in the environment leads to the development of many technologies. Post-treatment processes of waste gases are divided into two large groups, the processes of recovery (absorption, adsorption, condensation, membrane separation) and processes of degradation (oxidation and biodegradation). Catalytic oxidation belongs to the advanced oxidation technologies and proved to be the most effective method for removing of undesirable low concentrations of VOC compounds present in the large volumes of waste gases. In this work the catalytic oxidation of the model component was performed in the metal monolithic reactor with a thin layer of mixed manganese and nickel oxide (Mn-NiOx/Al-Al2O3) as catalytic active material. A detailed description of the metallic monolith catalyst/reactor preparation was given, with a special emphasis on deposition of the catalytically active components on the metallic monolith carrier. Toluene was chosen as the model component because it is representative of the most common aromatic organic volatile compounds. The catalytic oxidation of toluene was carried out in the monolithic reactor at the constant weight of catalyst (0.0025 g) or at constant thickness of the catalytic layer. The effect of temperature (100-320 °C), the flow rates ratios of the reactant and the oxidant (10:3, 20:3), the total flow rates of the reaction mixture (23-100 ml/min), and the initial concentrations of toluene (50-233 ppm) on toluene conversion was investigated in details. It was found out that the prepared metallic monolith device (Mn-NiOx/Al-Al2O3) is an effective system for the catalytic heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of toluene at different operating conditions, with particularly notable conversion achieved at relatively low temperatures (< 200 °C). This points to the great possibilities of such a system for the removal of various VOC compounds from waste gases in the real systems, as an alternative for catalysts based on precious metals.
