In this work photolytic and photocatalytic degradation of anthelmintic albendazole were investigated. Besides the direct photolysis, oxidation processes including UV/TiO2 and UV/H2O2 using UV-A and UV-C radiation were investigated. The degradation of albendazole was monitored using high performance liquid cromatography. The mechanism of albendazole degradation and degradation kinetics were determined. In all investigated processes concentration of albendazole were decreased. The addition of ozone and oxidant, H2O2, accelerated the photolytic and photocatalytic degradation of albendazole. In the photocatalytic degradation, using TiO2 film as catalyst, faster degradation was observed. The kinetics of photolytic and photocatalytic degradation of albendazole is complex and can be divided in two areas. In both of them degradation rate of albendazole can be described by the first-order kinetics. In all cases degradation was faster at the beginning of degradation process and slower in the second area. The effect of three radicals were investigated and it can be concluded that hydroxyl radical has an important role in photocatalytic degradation with UV-A radiation. The singlet oxygen and super oxide radical has no affect on photocatalytic degradation. Two degradation products were detected and identified based as albendazole sulfoxide i albendazol sulone, metabolites of albendazole.
