Abstract Humani i veterinarski lijekovi uslijed kontinuiranih proizvodnih procesa, stalno pronalaze svoje mjesto u okolišu, uglavnom kao rezultat istih, ili uslijed odlaganja neiskorištenih ili zastarjelih proizvoda i izlučevina.
Abstract (english) Human and veterinary medicines are constantly finding their place in the environment due to continuous production processes, mainly as a result thereof, or by disposal of unused or obsolete products and secretions. Due to their physico-chemical properties, many of these substances or their bioactive metabolites, may end up in soil and sediments, where accumulation might occure adverse effects in terrestrial or aquatic organisms. Among these effects, there is the growth of bacterial resistance caused by the extensive use of animal's antibiotics, adding manure and sewage sludge on agricultural fields, which is of particular importance.
With increasing awareness of the presence and action of pharmaceuticals in the environment, there is a need for increasing attention and supervision thereof, and establishing a legal framework, but also for the discovery and optimization of analytical methods of qualitative and quantitative determinations. Since conventional methods of removing pharmaceuticals do not provide the desired results, it is necessary to improving existing and developing new methods. Sorption is one of the processes that could be used to remove pharmaceuticals from wastewater, and therefore also of the environment.
The aim of this study was to determine the suitability of neutralization sludge generated in the process of neutralization exhausted sulphate acid bath, as sorbent for the removal of antibiotic ciprofloxacin from wastewater. As a method for determination of remaining ciprofloxacin in water samples after sorption was used UV/VIS spectrophotometry. Sorption coefficients of ciprofloxacin were determined using the linear regression of Freundlich and Langmuir sorption models. It was also determined the effect of temperature, pH, ionic strength and weight of the sludge on sorption process. Besides neutralization sludge, all experiments were performed with heat-treated neutralization sludge. In this way, we wanted to see whether the thermal treatment of neutralization sludge enhances the sorption of investigated pharmaceutical.
