Solid oral dosage forms occupy most of the pharmaceutical industry's market and are best received in patients, but there are various difficulties during their development, production and application. The implementation of 3D printing technology at an early stage of development could greatly reduce resource consumption, and this long-lasting process could be significantly shortened. Also, 3D printing technology has the potential to be a major step towards producing personalized medicines. In this study, the possibility of producing pharmaceutical dosage forms by Fused Deposition Modeling 3D printing technology is examined. Models with different geometries and thickness are printed, and the dispersion of active ingredient in oil is added during a pause in printing. Dronedarone hydrochloride is used as an active ingredient, Labrafil is used as an oil phase, and commercial PVA filament is used as a printing material. Printed dosage forms were subjected to in vitro dissolution tests and the results are interpreted in Microsoft Excel Add-In, DDSolver. Successful performance of 3D printing has provided six different models of solid polymer dosage forms. The results of dissolution tests showed proper and comparable release profiles with initial time delay, functionally related to the thickness of the shape wall. The profiles are described by the Makoid-Banakar model with time lag and the Peppas-Sahlin 2 model also with time lag. It is shown that 3D printing technology has the potential to become a method for a quick and simple production of personalized dosage forms with delayed release.
