This paper talks about the importance of water for development and the problem of careless usage of water resources. Rational use of water is a prerequisite for humanity's survival. Although the current amount of water is still enough for all living beings, strict and quality measures are needed to save the water quality and with it, the quality of life for future generations. Sustainable development is a term that goes hand in hand with preserving water amount and quality, it represents a trend that is present in the last few decades and it is becoming more and more widespread through United Nations goals. The goal of the paper is to show the current state of water quality and quantity in Croatia and the world, and also to show possible consequences of that state on present and future generations as well as point out the influence on water preservation in homes and all economy sectors. Although we are going towards rational water usage, the economic situation still looks for numerous changes which will improve quality and water preservation in general. Stricter measures are needed concerning waste waters and their recycling so economies can contribute to improvement of life for all beings on the planet. Also, households are taking on an important role in usage of drinking water for everyday needs. Important result of research in this paper that is also worth pointing out is the huge amount of water usage for electricity supply, as well as large quantities of water that are lost in the public water supply system. Considering that, it is of great importance to find new ways of generating electricity and to improve the current water supply systems so the loss of water can bi minimised. The focus of the paper is on educating future generations about living according to society’s needs and on raising individuals sensibile towards growing needs of nature and in that way, work on all aspects of water resource preservation.
