Fear is an unpleasant emotion recognized early on in childhood and it represents an inborn coping mechanism that a person uses to protect themselves from different potential dangers. Children's developmental fears appear, alter, and spontaneously disappear when a child outgrows a certain phase of development; in each phase specific fears appear that play a certain role in that age. Outgrowing developmental fears occurs as a result of increase of the child's cognitive skills as well as acquiring a broader spectrum of strategies to cope with fears. The differences in occurrence and experience of fears can be attributed to the mutual influence of inheritance and environment. Most researchers believe that fears mostly developed through experience, conditioning and observation, but substantial role also have parents and their parenting style. The goal of this research paper was to examine the frequency of various fears that preschoolers have, the correlation of the children's fears and their parents' fears, and to examine whether there is a difference in the number of children’s fears depending on the amount of their exposure to media content. The participants of the research were parents (N=113) of children four, five and six years of age. The parents took part in a survey that consisted of socio-demographic questions, check lists that contained numerous fears and questions regarding media habits of children and parents. The results show that most common in children are developmental fears and that there is a moderate, positive correlation between the fears children and their parents (as adults) have. Also, no statistically significant difference was found between the overall number of children's fears depending on the time they spend in front of screens i.e. depending on the exposure to media content.
