The thesis provides an overview of the developmental benefits of babywearing, de-fined as the practice of keeping the infant close to the body of an adult who uses various de-vices that hold the infant's body in front of the body of the person carrying it. The first part of the thesis depicts the societal attitude towards the practice of carrying an infant across var-ious cultures and different historical periods, while emphasising the importance of babywear-ing for the whole family (relations). Furthermore, the physiological, socio-emotional and cog-nitive development of an infant included in babywearing is described. The literature suggests that such children cry less and have a slower heart rate due to the fact that the central, motor and cardiac systems are in coordination, thus achieving physiological well-being. Also, while the infant is being held in the mother's arms, it calms down faster and is less irritable because it feels a secure attachment. In cognitive development, babywearing stimulates neuro-behavioral development, making it easier for the infant to develop speech and communicate with the environment. Babywearing also makes it easier to provide the so-called kangaroo care as an intervention in premature infants, and is also appropriate for children with devel-opmental disabilities.
