Abstract | Kako digitalizacija ide korak naprijed, sa sobom povlači i novinarstvo. |
Abstract (english) | As digitalization advances, it pulls journalism with it. That is why we were interested in the ways in which different generations of journalists from daily newspaper "Večernji list" deal with reporting trends, that is, if there is a generation gap between younger and older co-workers regarding that issue. Such research still hasn't been done in Croatia, so that was one of the reasons for conducting it as well. We used an unstructured interview method which was the most suitable for this research because it allowed us to ask additional questions, find out deeper answers and guide the conversation in a desired direction. The research included 12 journalists, 3 from each of four age groups: twenties, thirties, forties and fifties. An interview with each participant lasted approximately one hour. For this research, a set of twelve questions had been prepared in advance, including digitalization, types of reporting the newsroom of "Večernji list", the future of the media and generational differences and similarities in journalists' work. This research has proved that there is a generation gap between younger and older generations, but not as big as initially expected. It is possible that the results were affected by the pandemic, that is the circumstances, because it sped the process of media digitalization. Due to the inability to work in the field and from newsrooms as before the pandemic of Coronavirus, journalists and editors had to come up with the ways to give audience the content they wanted and needed, while simultaneously keeping distance from people. Moreover, as people were quarantined, they spent more time on web portals, since they didn't have access to newspapers. That is why web portals started charging their content as well. The research has shown that younger journalists really do use digital technology in reporting more than older colleagues, but that difference decreases every day. Also, a lot depends on individuals and their will and desire to learn how to use technology, because there are journalists and editors in their 50s who use it as a working tool every day, as opposed to those in their 20s who use it only privately. Younger journalists don't use this digital technology professionally because they believe that they can do their job equally good without them. Anyway, there is one thing that positively surprises us and gives hope that journalism will keep its form and purpose to serve people, and eventually have their trust again which was betrayed a few years back, and that is the fact that all participants agree on how proper reporting should look like. As they stated, it should be objective, factual, in due time, current, truthful and verified. |
