Abstract
Rad obuhvaća razdoblje trajanja Republike od 1358. do 1808. godine te pokušava objasniti kakav je bio vojni ustroj Dubrovačke Republike. Država koja je preživjela niz pregovaranja, događanja i ratova uspjela je živjeti gotovo 450 godina zahvaljujući vještoj diplomaciji koju je odlično provodila. Bitnu ulogu u tolikoj održivosti Republike imao je i sam geografski položaj te zaštita drugih država. Organizacija vojske i mornarice sve do propasti Republike je imala isključivo obrambeni karakter. Kroz rad se pokušava objasniti kakva je bila organizacija pomorske, a kakva kopnene obrane te se obuhvaća i detaljno opisuje veliki fortifikacijski sklop koji je bio od iznimne važnosti za Dubrovačku Republiku. Zahvaćen je i razrađen teritorij od Konavovske Pevlake do Pelješca. Dolaskom slavnog Napoleona Bonapartea i nestankom male, ali snažne države rad se bliži kraju te se zaključiva da je Dubrovačka Republika izgubila svoju samostalnost upravo na način koji nikad nije primjenjivan, a to je nasilje.
Abstract (english)
The work covers the period of the existence of Dubrovnik Republic from 1358 to 1808 and aims to explain its’ military organization. The state which survived series of negotiations, events and wars managed to keep independence for almost 450 years thanks to skillful and perfectly implemented diplomacy. Important factor in keeping independence for such a long time was the geographical position of the Republic and the protection of other countries. The organization of the Republic’s Army and Navy forces had exclusively defensive character. This work is aiming to explain the organization of military defense from both sea and inland attacks and gives detailed explanation of the role of fortification system. The work covers the whole territory of the republic from Prevlaka in Konavle to Pelješac. With the arrival of the famous Napoleon Bonaparte and the disappearance of small but powerful country this work comes to an end. Final conclusion is that Dubrovnik Republic lost its independence in the manner that it has never applied – and that is violence.
