The change of the political system in Croatia from a single-party, controlled by the League of Communists, to a multi-party, the Greater Serbian nationalism that expedited the breakup of Yugoslavia and ultimately the war, were all contributing factors that prompted the new government to deal with anyone deemed suspicious or ineligible. In fact, those that had been considered critical and free-thinking at the time when the old system was coming to a close were suddenly proclaimed as ineligible by the national media, especially the Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT) and the newspaper Vjesnik. These individuals were mostly experienced journalists who would not accept the patterns of behaviour the government tried to impose on them. A number of familiar TV faces were replaced by new ones overnight, and many were deprived of the right to work as journalists. The Croatian Television (HTV), the only TV station in Croatia at the time, represented a great source of power to the political party in power – the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). In order to secure control over the powerful television media, the Croatian Democratic Party brought some of its trusted people to the managerial positions of that institution, or as it was referred to by one of its managing directors at the beginning of the 1990s – the cathedral of the Croatian spirit. People were made to leave the TV-station using various methods and those subject to the purge were the ones mostly considered politically ineligible and, as a rule, Serbian employees and journalists (even including those from mixed marriages). The war in Croatia served as a good pretext for dealing with those who were found bothersome, while getting rid of the unsuitable individuals was just meant to be a warning to the rest. The questions raised relating to the political purge of innocent individuals were mainly answered with silence. For various reasons, these stories have remained on the margins of the first years of independent and autonomous Croatia. Therefore, this thesis is a small contribution to the oral history of the media and is intended to address the issues that are still rarely addressed today.
